Take-out and delivery: one bright spot in a devastated US market

The US restaurant industry has now lost two-thirds of its workforce, more than eight million employees, as a result of COVID-19 closures, according to latest data from the National Restaurant Association.It reported that more than 60% of restaurant owners believed that existing federal relief programs would not enable them to keep their teams on payroll during the downturn. It said that nationally restaurants had lost $30 billion in March, and were on track to lose $50 billion in April, and estimated that COVID-19-related loss would be more than $240 billion by the end of the year.

Lockdown Britain reaching for the wine bottle

Wine drinking is getting a boost from the COVID-19 crisis, with new research showing that well over half of wine drinkers are either maintaining or increasing the number of times they drink wine.The latest CGA-Buyer Wine Insights Bulletin also finds that of those drinking wine more often, the key drinkers are younger and male, which is a significantly different profile to the typical on-trade wine customer.

Delivery in need of a new direction?

Britain’s appetite for hot food delivery may have peaked, according to new research from CGA. While third of consumers said they had ordered delivered restaurant or takeaway food during lockdown, with another 11% planning to, the results suggest there has been no change in demand since pubs and restaurants were closed down.

Food and beverage inflation low but pricing uncertainty looms

Foodservice pricing reached its lowest point for 12 months in February 2020 with the majority of food and beverage categories showing no or minimal year-on-year inflation, the latest edition of the CGA Prestige Foodservice Price Index reveals. Take-out switch still leaves US restaurants under pressure

As bars and restaurants across the United States close or significantly reduce their operations in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses have switched focus to take-out food and drink. Before the outbreak, take-out accounted for 11% of spend in US restaurants, but latest figures from Nielsen CGA’s RestaurantTrak dataset shows that for sites still operational, take-out sales grew 110% in the week ending March 28. Consumer research conducted by Nielsen CGA in the four major states, New York, California, Illinois and Florida, revealed that 66% of people say they have ordered a take-out or delivery in the past two weeks. Nonetheless, even for those restaurants and bars that have been able to stay open, overall sales still fell 77% in the same week.

CPL Learning calls for sector to champion personal development for those furloughed

CPL Learning, the learning & development partner to the hospitality sector, has welcomed the Government’s guidance on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and is encouraging those in hospitality to continue supporting personal development. “We believe the guidance provided means that employers can still provide their employees with access to learning and development resources so that they can continue with their personal development as long as it is at their discretion,” said Jamie Campbell, Chief Operating Officer at CPL Learning.
