The latest news on venues opening across the UK.

Sainsbury’s and the Boparan Restaurant Group say they will open 30 more restaurant centres at supermarkets over the next year. It follows a joint Restaurant Hub venture at a Sainsbury’s store in Selly Oak in Birmingham, which hosts brands including The Restaurant Hub at Sainsbury’s Selly Oak store including Caffè Carluccio’s, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Ed’s Diner and Slim Chickens. Food there is available for eat-in, takeaway and delivery. Sainsbury’s is also launching 30 branches of Starbucks in its supermarkets over the year. The openings are part of an overhaul of Sainsbury’s in-store food and drink offer, which will include the closure of 200 cafes.

 

The Real Greek will open a restaurant on Old Eldon Square in Newcastle in the next few weeks. It has taken on a unit that was previously occupied by buffet brand Big Lukes, next to Wagamama. It is the first location for The Real Greek in the north east of England.

 

Pizza restaurant and cocktail bar concept Pizza Punks will open at the Riverwalk development in Durham in April, local media report. It will be a sixth location for Pizza Punks, after Belfast, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester and Newcastle.

 

The Mission Mars group has submitted plans for its major new food and drink hall on Bold Street in Liverpool. It is to be called Zumhof Biergarten and will have various food spaces for independent traders, and drinks including a Bavarian-style drinking area. Mission Mars runs a similar Zumhof Biergarten concept in Digbeth in Birmingham.

 

Hickory’s Smokehouse will launch its latest new restaurant in Horbury near Wakefield in the next few weeks. It has also lined up an old pub site in Hutton near Preston for its 15th location in total.

 

The Six by Nico restaurant group is opening a new site on Union Street in Aberdeen shortly, local media report. It will be the tenth Six by Nico location around the UK and Ireland, joining restaurants in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, Liverpool and Dublin.

 

The Victoria Place development in Woking has announced the signing of three new food and drink operators for space totalling around 12,000 square feet. They are Asian fast casual brand Itsu, bakery and café Gail’s and Guildford-based cocktail bar Komo. Itsu and Komo will open in April, with Gail’s following later in the Spring.

 

Shaftesbury has signed Danish bakery and coffee brand Ole & Steen for an opening on Neal Street at London’s Seven Dials in April. The two-floor, 2,400 square feet site will be Ole & Steen’s 17th in the capital and 18th overall, and its largest location yet. Several more openings will follow in 2022.

 

The Big Mamma Group is to open a new restaurant on Kensington High Street in London. It will join three other London restaurants for the group: Gloria in Shoreditch, Circolo Popolare in Fitzrovia and Ave Mario in Covent Garden.

 

Steakhouse and grill group Middletons has just opened a new restaurant on Regent Court in Leamington Spa. The 190-cover unit was previously occupied by Gusto. It is a ninth location for Middletons, after Cambridge, Chelmsford, Colchester, King’s Lynn, Leicester, Milton Keynes, Norwich and Peterborough.

 

Mexican grill brand Tortilla has announced more openings in partnership with Compass Group’s Chartwells Universities. It will deliver 14 new locations on a franchise basis, adding to current locations at universities including Brunel, Middlesex, Sussex and Swansea.

 

Korean hot dog concept Myungrang Hot Dog will open its first UK location on the ground floor at Islington’s newly refurbished Angel Central later this year. The 2,200 square feet unit will be situated close to Pelicana, the group’s sister Korean fried chicken brand. Myungrang Hot Dog has around 730 sites internationally, including in the Philippines, Singapore, Mexico, Indonesia and Taiwan. Pelicana is opening in a 1,600 square feet space on the first floor at Angel Central shortly, having launched into the UK at Hammersmith Broadway.

 

Thai street food style brand Zaap Thai is opening its sixth restaurant on Eccleshall Road in Sheffield in the Spring. It joins two sites in Leeds and one in each of Nottingham, Newcastle and York.

 

Japanese on-the-go brand Kokoro opened in the Princes Mead retail centre in Farnborough this week. It has also lined up an opening in Tunbridge Wells, local media report.
