Bristol has seen faster growth in managed pub and restaurant sales than any other major British city, CGA’s latest ‘Top Towns’ report reveals—while Walsall in the Midlands is performing best among towns.
The exclusive analysis of sales for the four-week period to 11 August, based on CGA’s authoritative Trading Index database shows that sales in Bristol rose by 5.6% year on year. There was also strong growth in Leeds (5.1%), Edinburgh (4.6%) and Cardiff (3.8%).
The figures confirm recent CGA research indicating a high rate of new openings in major city centres beyond London. In the capital, the Top Towns research paints a mixed picture, with sales in the north west and south east regions of London up by 9.0% and 8.2% respectively, but rising only modestly in the north (0.9%) and east (2.2%).
Among British towns, year on year sales for the four weeks to 11 August in Walsall rocketed by 21.8%. There were also very strong sales in other Midlands towns, including Dudley (10.2%) and Wolverhampton (10.0%). At the other end of the scale, Gillingham and Colchester saw the sharpest drops in sales year on year, of 10.1% and 10.0% respectively.
