White sparkles as wine holds BevAl share in the US On Premise

New insights from CGA by NIQ reveal opportunities for On Premise suppliers to raise RoS in table white and red wine after a standout year for sparkling white segments.

CGA’s On Premise Measurement (OPM) solution shows wine attracted 12.7% of all BevAl spending by value in the 12 months to mid-July—exactly level with its split over the previous year. Sparkling white wine made the biggest gains of any sub-category over the period, growing its share of total sales by 0.5 percentage points. This was also the only segment to achieve year-on-year growth in dollar terms, as spending rose by 0.6% to $2.8 bn.

Table white also enjoyed a fractional increase in wine share, rising 0.1 percentage points to take 35.5% of the total category. White wine’s growth came at the expense of table red and table pink, which lost 0.2 and 0.3 percentage points of share respectively.

CGA by NIQ’s expert analysis reveals important nuances in the wine category from state to state, helping On Premise suppliers and operators pinpoint opportunities to increase RoS. It identifies California as the most valuable state for table white wine despite a lower than average level of distribution—a sign of the untapped potential for the category in this state. Meanwhile, table red wine may be currently underperforming in New York, where there are opportunities to grow RoS by leveraging the most influential purchase influences and channels.

The OPM solution provides many more insights into wine sales trends from region to region in the US. They include the shifting balance of domestic and imported wine, with year-on-year gains for domestic products in eastern states including New York and Pennsylvania, and growing interest in imported wine in western markets like California and Oregon. The exclusive OPM service helps On Premise businesses localize and optimize promotional and assortment campaigns across the US.

Matthew Crompton, CGA by NIQ’s VP – Americas, On Premise said: “Wine’s share of the out-of-home BevAl market has held up well in the last year, and growth for sparkling white highlights its enduring role in special and celebratory occasions. However, with volumes and distribution under pressure, suppliers and venues are having to work hard to protect visibility and raise RoS. A detailed understanding of the market by segment, state, source and much more is more important than ever, and businesses that achieve it will be best placed to respond nimbly to the latest trends and seize opportunities as they emerge.”
