CGA by NIQ reveals the ups and downs of wine in the US On Premise

Wine sales are under pressure in the US On Premise, but there is strong share growth in Californian chains through varietals like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Those are among a range of insights from the latest On Premise Measurement (OPM) data from CGA by NIQ, which provides expert analysis of wine’s performance, helping suppliers and operators track trends and adapt strategies.

It shows On Premise wine sales totalled $13.8bn in 2024—down by 5.3% year-on-year. This was driven by a combination of a 4.3% fall in rate of sale and a 1.0% drop in distribution points.

The report highlights the key role of chain restaurants in wine in the US On Premise. While chains account for 15% of all wine outlets, they generate 23% of total sales—giving them a significantly higher rate of sale than independent venues. However, total volumes and rate of sale fell slightly faster in chains than the market as a whole in 2024.

CGA’s exclusive sales measurement solution also pinpoints state-by-state variations in chains’ wine performance, enabling suppliers to precision-target locations. California was comfortably the best performing state in 2024, gaining just over 2 percentage points of volume share year-on-year. Texas and Arizona were among other states stealing share.

There were similar fluctuations in share by varietal in chain restaurants. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon both increased their share of total wine sales by value by 0.5 percentage points year-on-year. These two varietals now command 13.6% and 17.4% shares of the market respectively.

Matthew Crompton, CGA by NIQ’s Vice-President: On Premise-Americas, said: With wine volumes under pressure and mounting challenges from other categories, it is more crucial than ever for wine suppliers and venues to identify areas of potential. We are sure to see further change in engagement patterns from state to state and varietal to varietal in 2025, so businesses will need to stay on top of trends and target the right locations with the right portfolios. Giving consumers exactly what they want will be key to reviving growth.”
