New openings round-up

Loungers, Pot Kettle Black, Tortilla, YO! Sushi and JD Wetherspoon are a few in this week's new openings.

YO! has applied for permission to change use on an old retail unit on Brunel Square in Bath. It previously operated in Bath at Milsom Square, but closed last October. Local media report that the brand will be experimenting with “new concepts” at the new site.

The Avenue Group is to open a new bar and restaurant by Royal Albert Dock called Mann Island Social in the next few weeks. The 4,000 square feet site joins three other venues in the Avenue group, including two Socials—St Paul’s Social and East Parade Social.

Temper founder and chef Neil Rankin is to open a new vegan burger concept called Simplicity Burger on Brick Lane in October. It is a collaboration with Truscott Arms owner Andrew Fishwick and Smokehouse chef David Lagonell. The menu of the new venture will be 90% vegan.

Yard Sale Pizza is to open its fifth restaurant on Hackney Road in September. It has taken on a unit by Hoxton station previously occupied by Bad Sports. The new site joins Yard Sale Pizzas in Finsbury Park, Clapton, Walthamstow and Leyton.

Thai street food restaurant Zaap is opening in York shortly, having taken on a unit previously occupied by Gourmet Burger Kitchen on Lendal, which shut earlier this year. Zaap also has branches in Leeds, Nottingham and Newcastle.

Loungers opened the Portico Lounge in Abergavenny in Wales on Wednesday (17 July).

Japanese and Peruvian crossover brand Waka is to open an on the go site at Houndsditch in the City towards the end of August. Waka operates at White City Place and Wood Lane, and previously had a site in the City on Eastcheap.

Eastern England pub and restaurant operator The Chestnut Group has acquired a tenth site—The Crown in Stoke-by-Nayland in Suffolk.

Tortilla has been confirmed for a new opening at Cabot Circus in Bristol shortly.

Healthy on the go brand Pure has just opened at Liverpool Street station—its 21st site in all.

Coffee brand 200 Degrees has just opened at the Metquarter centre in Liverpool—its ninth site in all.

Manchester coffee and all-day brunch brand Pot Kettle Black is to open a new site in Angel Gardens in the city in the autumn. It will join Pot Kettle Black sites at Barton Arcade and Spinningfields, with another site lined up for Manchester Airport next year.

The south of England Dancing Moose group has just opened its fifth restaurant and bar in Salisbury. It is in a unit previously occupied by Bill’s. Dancing Moose also has sites in Bournemouth, Ashley Cross, Penn Hill and Wimborne.

Vegetarian Middle Eastern restaurant Bubala, which has operated as a pop-up and supper club in several places lately, is to open a permanent site on Commercial Street in Spitalfields in the autumn.

The Butcombe Brewery is opening a café, bar and hotel operation in Bath on Tuesday (23 July). Broad Street Townhouse will have a speakeasy-style bar called The Blind Pig.

JD Wetherspoon is to open in Galway in Ireland after acquiring an old nightclub. It is spending around £2m to turn it into a 4,000 square feet pub with a 1,900 square feet beer garden. JD Wetherspoon currently has seven pubs in Ireland with plans to open many more.
