New openings round-up

Tortilla, Brewdog, Slug & Lettuce and Salt Bae's Nusr-Et steakhouse round out this week's new openings.

Fast casual Mexican restaurant group Tortilla will open four new restaurants this summer: on Wardour Street in Soho, Cabot Circus in Bristol, Cornmarket in Oxford, and Market Square in Cambridge. They follow recent launches in London and Dubai, and take Tortilla’s total estate to 49. Managing director Richard Morris said: “We have been cautious over the last 18 months with our openings programme, and the issues we have seen in the sector would suggest that was a sensible strategy. We are now however delighted to have such phenomenal locations opening this year, allowing us to really put our foot down again, whilst continuing to grow sales in our existing estate.”

Franco Manca will open its new restaurant at the Guildhall Dining Quarter in Exeter on Tuesday (25 June). It has taken on a unit there that was previously run by GBK.

BrewDog opens a new bar on Oxford Road in Manchester on Saturday (21 June)—its second in the city. Outpost Manchester has an on-site microbrewery and a ‘Beer School’ offering tutored tastings and brewery tours. It is BrewDog’s 90th pub worldwide and its second brewpub.

Stonegate Pub Company is opening a Slug & Lettuce on Grainger Street in Newcastle. It will be a refurb of a unit currently run under Stonegate’s Yates brand. It will be a second Slug & Lettuce in Newcastle for Stonegate.

Arc Inspirations is to convert The Pit venue in Harrogate to its Manahatta bar and restaurant brand. The £300,000 refurb will see the site open in early September. It will be a fifth Manahatta venue for Arc, following two launches in Leeds and two in Manchester. Chief executive Martin Wolstencroft said: “It’s exciting times for us as we continue to focus on and invest in our highly-differentiated growth brands and maintain the momentum we’ve achieved over the past year.”

Indian street food and craft beer brand Bundobust has just opened a 4,000 square feet site on Bold Street in Liverpool. It is a third site, after Leeds and Manchester. The 5,300 square feet Liverpool site

Pizza concept Pizza1889 is opening in the Broadmead area of Bristol in the next few weeks. It joins Pizza1889 operations in shopping containers ain London, Kent and Cambridge.

The restaurant group run by Scottish-Italian chef Nico Simeone is to open a seventh site in Manchester in the next few weeks. Six by Nico, a 3,000 square feet restaurant at Spring Gardens, will be his first launch in England after openings in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Mediterranean restaurant group Chucs has just opened a café-restaurant on Old Brompton Road in South Kensington. It joins the group’s café in the Serpentine Gallery and restaurants on Dover Street and Westbourne Grove and within Harrods.

The group behind London restaurants Primeur, Westerns Laundry and Jolene this week opened a new fish-based venue called Fitzroy in Fowey in Cornwall.

Steakhouse restaurant Buenasado has opened at the Oracle centre in Reading, in a unit previously occupied by CAU. It is a seventh site for the Buenos Aires Argentine Steakhouse group, after Chiswick, Horsham, Reigate, Richmond, Walton-on-Thames and Wimbledon.

German beer hall concept Bierschenke will open in Tower Hill on Thursday (27 June). The 6,000 square feet site will have a capacity of 400. It is a second site for Bierschenke after London Wall. More openings are planned for the brand.

Restaurateur and social media star Salt Bae will open his first UK site in Knightsbridge towards the end of the year. The Nusr-Et steakhouse will be situated at the Park Tower.

Ossett Brewery is to open a pub in Horbury Bridge near Wakefield after acquiring the Bingley Arms. It will be the 20th site for the brewery, and will open after refurbishment in early 2020.

St Austell Brewery has acquired its first pub in Wiltshire—the Red Lion in Cricklade.

Manchester-based on the go vegan concept Go Falafel has opened in Liverpool. It joins two sites in Manchester’s Piccadilly and Rusholme, and one in Preston.
