New Openings Round-Up 23 April

The latest news on venues opening across the U.K.

Italian food hall concept Eataly will open its long-awaited venue on Broadgate in the City next Thursday (29 April). The 42,000 square feet hall is Eataly’s first UK venture, and will have various restaurant, bar, café, retail and cookery school components with a large outdoor space. The full indoor opening will follow in May.

 

Bar and restaurant brand Boujee has launched a new open-air concept at Liverpool ONE. In the Park by Boujee is on Chavasse Park near Boujee at Kenyon Steps, which will reopen on 17 May. The park operation will have 320 picnic bench covers, with food and drink ordered via an app and served from Boujee’s pink vans.

 

Franco Manca says it is nearing completion on two new restaurants—on High Holborn in London and on Mitchell Street in Glasgow. The openings are scheduled for June.

 

Thai brand Giggling Squid is to open in Sutton Coldfield’s Mulberry Walk development, local media report. It has taken on a unit previously occupied by Gusto.

 

German Doner Kebab is opening at the O2 in Greenwich as it continues a UK rollout. Japanese noodle concept Marugame Udon, which is launching into the UK in Liverpool Street in July, is also opening a second site there. Kitchen Pizzeria is meanwhile relocating from Shoreditch to the O2, and a new Middle Eastern restaurant, Soukra, will open.

 

US-style barbecue concept Hickory’s is opening a new restaurant in Nuthall near Nottingham. It has taken on a pub previously run by Marston’s, and hopes to be open after a major refurbishment by the end of the summer. Hickory’s currently has 12 restaurants in the UK, most of which are now trading outside.

 

Italian steak restaurant brand Macellaio RC is opening a new restaurant on Shaftesbury Avenue—its sixth in London. The unit was previously run by Café Monico, and Macellaio RC will open there in late May. Its other five locations are in Fitzrovia, South Kensington, Exmouth Market, Battersea and Union Street.

 

Filipino fast casual restaurant group Jollibee has announced plans to open ten new restaurants in the UK this year, including a flagship site in London’s Leicester Square in the next few weeks. It has also secured planning permission to open in units on Northumberland Street in Newcastle, Queen Street in Cardiff and Briggate in Leeds. Jollibee’s current UK sites are in London’s Earls Court, Leicester and Liverpool.

 

Vietnamese Street Kitchen has opened a second restaurant in Birmingham. The launch at the Bullring follow the original location at Resorts World Birmingham and has an outdoor terrace, plus 140 inside covers when it is able to open fully.

 

Tortilla has submitted plans to open a new site at the Guildhall Shopping and Dining Centre in Exeter, local media report.

 

Mitch Tonks’ Rockfish brand is to open a restaurant in Salcombe in Devon next Spring. Rockfish currently has eight locations around the UK.

 

Italian restaurant and bar chain Doppio Malto is to launch into the UK market with a unit on George Square in Glasgow that was previously occupied by Jamie’s Italian. It will launch a 180-cover restaurant and basement bar in June. Doppio Malto translates as ‘double malt’ and specializes in traditional Italian food and craft beers. It says it has ambitions to open dozens more sites in the UK.

 

Choppaluna, an on the go healthy brand from Hero Brands, says it is planning two more London openings after launching its first UK site on Marchmont Street in Bloomsbury late last year. Choppaluna prepares salad bowls and rolls to order in front of guests, and also has a breakfast offer. Hero Brands is currently rolling the German Doner Kebab brand in the UK.
