Innovation and celebration can help wine sparkle after lockdown

Pink Prosecco, sparkler cocktails and spritz serves are all set to add fresh momentum to the sparkling wine category when bars, pubs and restaurants return over the spring and summer.

Those are among the big trends for 2021 highlighted in ‘The Future for Fizz’, the third in a four-part series of Wine Insight Reports from CGA. Fusing in-depth consumer, sales, and outlet data with expert analysis by Richard Siddle at The Buyer, the report provides a fascinating overview of the dynamic category, alongside actionable insights for wine-focused operators and suppliers.


The sparkling wine and Champagne market was evolving fast before the COVID-19 pandemic and could benefit from a release of pent-up demand for celebratory occasions when consumers are able to drink out again. ‘The Future for Fizz’ reveals how businesses can prepare to capitalise by optimising the range and serve styles of sparkling wine.


The exclusive research in the report spotlights big trends including the rising popularity of British sparkling wine. It also reveals:


  • Prosecco accounts for 85% of total sparkling wine volume in the On Premise (excluding Champagne)
  • More than a third (35%) of On Premise wine drinkers drink sparkling wine or champagne when out
  • Sparkling rosé variants including Pink Prosecco are well placed for major growth. 15% of drinkers in Britain—seven million people—now say they would consider buying them, with younger adults particularly interested.
  • Cocktails and spritzes are an important gateway to the category, with just under two thirds of those who could be attracted to spritzes being non-wine consumers.If the vaccine rollout progresses well and the On Premise can reopen smoothly, we may well see a major uplift in celebratory visits out—and that would bring excellent opportunities across the sparkling wine category,” says Mark Newton, CGA client director and wine category specialist.
