New business confidence survey launched this weekend

As the country enters another week of lockdown, what is the mood among the leaders of Britain’s pub, restaurant, bar and café companies? How widespread are concerns about furloughed staff, Government payments, loans and rent? And what else is on the minds of operators? Is it too early to start planning for a post-lockdown return to business? How many are already mapping out options? These are some of the vital questions that will be asked in the latest CGA Business Confidence survey, run in conjunction with technology specialists Fourth that will land in leaders’ inboxes this weekend.

Food and beverage inflation low but pricing uncertainty looms

Foodservice pricing reached its lowest point for 12 months in February 2020 with the majority of food and beverage categories showing no or minimal year-on-year inflation, the latest edition of the CGA Prestige Foodservice Price Index reveals. However, with the global COVID-19 pandemic now causing major disruption to global supply chains, and prompting shutdowns of some industries and consumer sectors worldwide, it is likely that pricing will be volatile in the coming months.

New E-learning platform for hospitality workers launched

Hospitality trade body UKHospitality and learning and development provider CPL Learning have launched an online training platform for hospitality team members.UKH Pathway is free to use while hospitality businesses remain closed due to the COVID-19 crisis, and provides access to learning, wellbeing and personal development resources for furloughed employees.

Take-out switch still leaves US restaurants under pressure

As bars and restaurants across the United States close or significantly reduce their operations in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses have switched focus to take-out food and drink. Before the outbreak, take-out accounted for 11% of spend in US restaurants, but latest figures from Nielsen CGA’s RestaurantTrak dataset shows that for sites still operational, take-out sales grew 110% in the week ending March 28. Consumer research conducted by Nielsen CGA in the four major states, New York, California, Illinois and Florida, revealed that 66% of people say they have ordered a take-out or delivery in the past two weeks. Nonetheless, even for those restaurants and bars that have been able to stay open, overall sales still fell 77% in the same week.

Britain’s drinking habits are changing under lockdown

With Britain’s pubs, bars and restaurants shut down, the nation’s drinking patterns have changed as a result, with almost a quarter of the population (24%) buying alcohol online in the past two weeks, and with more planning to in the coming weeks, new research from CGA shows.

The public has become increasingly focused on health and wellness as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, with two thirds (66%) of adults saying they are now taking precautions to protect long term health, such as changing what they eat and drink and how frequently they exercise, new research from CGA reveals.

Pub and restaurant sales fall 71% in last week of trading

Like-for-like sales in Britain’s managed pub, bar and restaurant groups plummeted 71% in the week that the Government ordered all licensed premises to close down because of the COVID-19 crisis. Exclusive weekly figures from the Coffer Peach Business Tracker showed like-for-like trading in restaurant chains down 75%, with managed pubs down 67% and bars, which are more dependent on weekend business, tumbling 88%.

Britain sees the opportunity for more delivered food and drink

With Britain in lock-down, hot food delivery services from restaurants and takeaways are set to have an increasingly important role in keeping the nation fed. The public’s appetite for delivered food has been growing. In the week prior to yesterday’s Prime Ministerial order for the public to say at home, research from CGA showed that just over half (53%) of the public are either currently using, or planning to use, delivery as an alternative during the current crisis, with 13% getting delivery from a restaurant or takeaway either for the first time, or more often than usual, in the last two weeks.

Increasing numbers set to stay away from pubs and restaurants

Britain’s restaurants and pubs can expect almost total shut-down next week, with increasing numbers of the public deciding to stop going out because of COVID-19 fears – even if they haven’t already.

In a poll carried out by CGA on Wednesday this week, over half (52%) of adults who normally eat or drink out said they had already stopped going to restaurants on Government advice, and with crucially half (51%) of those yet to stop visiting saying they would cease in the coming week.
