New openings round up

Starbucks, Pizza Union, Yo! Sushi, Motu Indian Kitchen and Turtle Bay round out our list of new openings this week. 

Five Guys has signed to open a major new site at the Liverpool ONE development. It has taken a 4,800 square feet unit on the Terrace there, alongside brands including Wagamama, PizzaExpress and GBK. The 175-cover restaurant will open in the summer. Neville Mailing, head of property at Five Guys, added: “Securing a location on The Terrace at Liverpool ONE fulfils a long-held ambition for Five Guys.  We are in a prime location in one of the UK’s prime cities.”

JD Wetherspoon will open its 50th hotel on 21 February. It will be situated alongside its latest pub opening, the George in Brecon. The hotel comes 19 years after Wetherspoon opened its first. Chairman Tim Martin said: “We are pleased to have reached this milestone. Our hotels continue to prove extremely popular and we are looking forward to opening many more in the coming months and years. They complement our pubs perfectly and are an important part of our overall business.”

Whitbread has opened the third branch of its new Bar + Block steakhouse concept, at the Whiteley shopping centre in Fareham in Hampshire. It is a 4,500 square feet unit with 177 covers, and joins the first two Bar + Block locations in Birmingham and London’s King’s Cross.

Leon has signed a deal to open its first restaurant in the north west, at the Intu Trafford Centre in Manchester. The 1,940 square feet site will continue Leon’s expansion beyond London. Property director Adam Blaker said: “We’ve been overwhelmed with requests to open in Manchester so we’re delighted to make those dreams come true.”

The Revolution Bars Group has applied for permission to open a bar in Solihull. It wants to convert a restaurant unit previously occupied by Jimmy Spices.

Marston’s says it will open a new-build pub and restaurant called the Ten Lock Flight in Runcorn in April. It is named after the locks on the nearby canal.

Honest Burgers is readying two new openings for the next few weeks: on Chiswick High Road on 6 March and Nelson Road in Greenwich a week later on 13 March.

Pizza bar chain Pizza Union has secured a third site on Leman Street in Aldgate. The other two branches are on Sandy’s row in Spitalfields and Pentonville Road in King’s Cross.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen has opened a restaurant at the Ocean Plaza development in Southport. It has meanwhile secured an opening at the new Riverside North leisure scheme being developed in Bedford, where it will join brands including Wagamama, Zizzi and Miller & Carter.

YO! Sushi has signed up to the £20m Cathedral Square development in Worcester. It has taken a 2,750 square feet unit on a 15-year lease. Asian buffet brand Kung Fu has meanwhile taken a 6,700 square feet unit. The Cathedral Square development should be complete by April, and has already signed up restaurant brands including ASK Italian, All Bar One, Byron, Cosy Club and Miller & Carter.

Motu Indian Kitchen, the delivery and takeaway concept developed by the Sethi family behind the Gymkhana and Trishna restaurants, will open a third site in Canary Wharf on Tuesday (20 February). It will serve homes and offices in areas including Limehouse, Poplar, Millwall and Cubitt Town.

Miller & Carter has confirmed an opening in Washford Mill in Studley in the summer, local media report. Local media also suggest that it is also preparing to open on Colchester High Street, close to Wagamama and Las Iguanas.

Turtle Bay is recruiting for an opening of a Middlesbrough restaurant that is due to open in April. It has also secured a site in Colchester, local media report.

The Restaurant Group’s Chiquito brand has opened at the Queensgate centre in Harlow.

SOHO Coffee Co has opened a new flagship café at the Brewery Quarter in Cheltenham—the town where it made its first opening in 1999. It becomes SOHO’s 32nd branch, with 11 more to follow this year. The new site covers 1,3000 square feet in a corner pitch at the Brewery Quarter. You can view SOHO Coffee Co’s property requirements here.

A new Starbucks is opening at the Ards shopping centre in Newtownards in Northern Ireland in the spring. It is part of a major overhaul of the centre.

PizzaExpress opened a 140 square metre restaurant in Formby this week.

Stonegate Pub Company is to open a new Walkabout bar in Colchester. It will be a conversion of its existing Missoula venue in the town. It will be the first new opening of a Walkabout since Stonegate acquired the brand late last year.
