New openings round-up

Brands including Tortilla, Domino's, Leon, Nandos, Chopstix, Turtle Bay and the Alchemist are among those with new opening plans to report this week. 

Irish pub group McGettigan’s has opened its first UK pub on Fulham Broadway in London. The brand has 13 sites in the Middle East, Singapore and New York as well as Ireland, and the London site is an Enterprise Inns venue. McGettigan’s now plans more UK openings. Chief executive Dennis McGettigan said: “To open our first venue in London is a real landmark for us and we are extremely excited to be here… McGettigan’s is celebrated across the world for providing a uniquely premium, modern Irish pub experience and we already have many London-based fans who have discovered our brand overseas.” Enterprise regional manager Joy Jones said: “We are proud to be working with McGettigan’s to launch this fabulous pub concept… It’s an incredible brand. We love what they’ve done with the site and they’ve been a pleasure to work with.”

Gourmet Burger Kitchen opens in Staines on 8 August. It has taken a site at the Two Rivers shopping centre.

Tortilla wants to open in Brixton, reports Brixton Buzz. It has applied for permission to open a 54-cover venue on a former retail site on Brixton Road.

Domino’s is opening a new eat-in restaurant in Hull, local media report. It will be a two-floor location with space for about 40 people to eat in, along with takeaway facilities. The plans are now awaiting formal approval from the city council.

Fuller’s has reopened the Astronomer pub on Middlesex Street near Liverpool Street in the City after a major refurbishment. It joins the Fuller’s Ale and Pie brand and has taken on a new look themed around astronomy. Fuller’s Inns managing director Jonathon Swaine said: “The Astronomer is a fantastic site and this new scheme really takes it to a new dimension. It’s the perfect marriage of science and beer—and the first time we’ve included two astronomical clocks in a pub’s design. If you have a passion for the stars, and a love of pies and pints, this really is the pub for you.”

Leon is to open a second site at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam early next year, just months after launching its first there. The site will be airside, and run with HMS Host. You can view their property requirements here.

The Individual Restaurants group is to open a major new Opera Grill restaurant in Chester. It will open next Thursday (4 August), in a converted church opposite Individual’s Piccolino restaurant.

Nando’s opens in the Manor Walks shopping centre in Cramlington next Wednesday (3 August)—its first restaurant in Northumberland.

Chinese noodle brand Chopstix is opening with Welcome Break at its motorway service station at Birchanger Green. It launches there on 3 August and will open from 10am to 10pm every day. Chopstix are looking to expand and require busy shopping centres, food courts and high street locations. A major new street food operation will launch in Camden Market’s West Yard on 12 August with the permanent reopening of the KERB collective. There are 35 operators lined up there in all, including Baba G’s, BBQ Dreamz, Burger & Beyond, Crabbieshack, Hanoi Kitchen, Kothu Kothu, Nazari, Roti House and Toastis. On the drinks side, Camden Town Brewery are helping to run a dedicated bar. The venue will be open from 11am to 6pm in the week, and until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 7pm on Sundays. KERB founder Petra Barran said: “KERB was set up to bring together talented traders and to raise the standard of street food in London. Camden is the perfect place for us to grow our mission and engage Londoners with the best and most diverse food offering out there. We are very excited to be working with the Camden Market team to help establish a new era for this historical market.” 

Turtle Bay has set late August for its latest new opening in Norwich. It has taken a unit on Swan Lane with 180 covers over two floors.

A new as yet unnamed restaurant concept is being opened in Altrincham in September, set up by Danny Fox, ex of Living Ventures. It is a wood-fired concept offering steaks, fish and pizza.

Loungers opened its latest new Lounge in Derby yesterday—the Camero Lounge. It is on St Peter’s Street in the city.

The Alchemist will open in Birmingham on 26 September, the city’s Mail newspaper reports. It has taken a unit at the Grand Hotel in Colmore Row, and will incorporate a speakeasy-style bar as well as a 66-cover restaurant. Fellow Living Ventures brand Gusto will open next door.

Prezzo has opened in Moseley near Birmingham.

A new Italian concept called Pasta Loco is to open on Cotham Hill off Whiteladies Road in Bristol. It has taken over from Havana there in a deal brokered by Christie & Co.

A new Portuguese bar and restaurant concept will open at Flat Iron Square by the arches of London Bridge in September. Bar Douro’s offer will include small plates and Portuguese wine.

South American cantina y bar concept Bodega are still searching for new restaurant premises in the Midlands, they are targeting towns such as Derby and Coventry. View their requirements here.
