Young adults ‘broadening their eating out horizons’

People are eating out more often and in a wider variety of places than ever before, new data from Greene King’s Leisure Spend Tracker confirms—with young adults having the biggest range of options.

CGA Peach’s BrandTrack survey has showed consumers have been widening their portfolio of brands for several years now, and Greene King’s latest poll found that one in three people now visit a wider range of places than two years ago. The figure rises to more than half of 18 to 24 year olds and well over a third of 25 to 34 year olds. 

The poll found that British households spent an average of £220 on out of home leisure in December, up by 5% on the same month in 2014. Spending on eating and drinking out was flat year on year, but up by 13% and 22% respectively on November. 

Greene King’s group marketing director Fiona Gunn said: “In spite of the economic pressures faced by today’s Generation Y, they are the most likely of any group to report that they are going out for meals in the evening, compared to a couple of years ago. It was again this age bracket that proved that they’re broadening their horizons fastest as the majority of these youngsters are experimenting with a wider range of places when eating and drinking out.”
